Question

A rectangular loop with a length of 0.600 m, width of 0.400 m, and consisting of 129 tightly-wrapped turns is hinged along the y-axis and placed in a uniform magnetic field such that the plane of the loop makes an angle of 35.0

A rectangular loop with a length of 0.600 m, width of 0.400 m, and consisting of 129 tightly-wrapped turns is hinged along the y-axis and placed in a uniform magnetic field such that the plane of the loop makes an angle of 35.0 A degree with the x-axis (see figure below). The magnetic field has a magnitude of 0.822 T and points in the positive x direction, and the current in the coil is 1.25 A. (a) Determine the magnitude of the torque exerted on the loop. in N A m (b) Determine the expected direction of rotation of the loop. The loop rotates clockwise as viewed from above. The loop rotates counterclockwise as viewed from above. The loop does not rotate.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Here ,

magnetic moment , u = N*A*I

u = 129 * 0.6 * 0.4 * 1.25

u =38.7 A.m^2

Now , torque = u * B * sin(theta)

theta = 90 - 35 = 55

Torque = 38.7 * 0.822 * sin(55)

Torque = 26.1 N.m

the torque acting on the loop is 26.1 N

b)

Now , as Torque = u X B

using right hand screw rule

Hence , the loop rotates clockwise as seen from above
