Question
A charged particle moves in the x
A charged particle moves in the xay plane, and a magnetic field B is directed into the plane as shown in the figure below. The magnetic force on the particle causes the particle to move clockwise along a circle of radius R. (a) Is the particle positively charged or negatively charged? (choose one) positively charged or negatively charged (b) The charge of the particle is increased by a factor of nine, and the particle is found to move in a circle of radius R'. What is the ratio R'/R? R'/R= ? (c) The mass of the particle is decreased by a factor of seven, and the particle is found to move in a circle of radius R'. What is the ratio R'/R? R/R= ?Explanation / Answer
a)
It is given that the particle is moving clockwise and the dircetion of the magnetic field is directed into the plane. using right hand palm rule, the dircetion of the particle is possible only when the charge is negative.
Therefore, the particle is negative charge.
b)
The chrage particle satisfy the relation given by
mv2/R = qvB
Here, mass of the particle is m, velociyt of the particle is v, charge of the aprticle is q and magnetic field is B.
R = mv / qB
If the charge is increased by nine, then the new radius is
R' = mv / 9qB
Then, the ratio
R' / R = 1 /9
Therefore, the ratio R' / R is 1:9.
c)
If the mass is decreased by a factor of seven, the new radius is
R" = (m/7)v / qB
Then,
R" / R = 1:7
Therefore, the ration R" / R is 1:7.
