Many nurses from the Philippines emigrate to work in the United States. Their educational training is similar and they can speak English. One thing that surprises them when they start work here is that part of their job is to provide personal care to patients. In the Philippines, it is family members who feed and help with hygiene tasks. One nurse reported that in the Filipino hospital where she worked, she had never seen a patient alone.

How do you think this might shape Filipino nurses’ impressions of typical families in the United States?

How would you explain to them why in this country, personal care is typically performed by the nursing staff, such as nursing assistants?

In one U.S. health care facility, a Filipino nurse was reported to spend a lot of time on her phone during her shift. It was assumed that she was talking with her family and friends. It turned out that she was speaking with Filipino nurses in other parts of the hospital who considered her an expert and were calling her for advice.

Why do you think the nurses were calling a colleague in a different department, rather than asking for help from their supervisors or the other nurses on their shift?

Patient care is an indigenous factor of healthcare delivery services. Increasing demand on healthcare team is very crucial in the decision making process for delivering care to patients and their families. When to comes to other nationalities, it is necessary to learn the requirements of the country's regulations, this can help the migrants to get accustomed to the current requirements. This enables to deliver effective care with quality outcomes.

- The important tool is creating such work environment where they can learn to express their knowledge and skills towards Patient care.

A good orientation and induction training program for the nurses can give a broad view on the working culture of the organisation.

A clear job description can make the nurses understand their duties and responsibilities.

Briefing the standard protocols can help the nurses to understand the sequence of any nursing procedures to work effectively

To help them to know about the team members and their roles in assisting the patient's to carry out their daily needs.

- Personal care is an important aspect of patient care because it helps to improve the patient's satisfaction and have their feel of individuality.

Healthcare members are trained professionally to take care of patients well.

All interventions are evidence based practice, hence all actions have rationale behind it. So,the task is performed logically.

Standard operating procedures in nursing have the set of procedures and their steps to follow. So, in any procedure,the steps are followed properly and chance of missing any nuances in the procedure

The competence of the nursing assistants are evaluated timely to understand the skills

Training is a part of nurses life, thus any updating in the academics are being inculcated in their routines

Any complications or developing problems like oral ulcers, pressure ulcers, rep vein thrombosis can be evaluated by the nurses during care

Many a times, the fresh graduates are scared about the new working environment as well as hesitation to come forward to clear their doubts with seniors or colleagues. Moreover, people have a tendency to hide the imperfections.

On the other hand, the fellow nurses must be comfortable with this nurse in the previous organisations. This nurse must have been skillful in the area of interest. She might possess better communication skills to explain the procedures and policies. She must be helpful in nature in terms of personal and professional ways.
