Question

A magician wishes to create the illusion of a 2.55-m-tall elephant. He plans to do this by forming a virtual image of a 72.0 cm tall model elephant with the help of a spherical mirror.

(a) Should the mirror be concave or convex?

Explain.

This answer has not been graded yet.

(b) If the model must be placed 3.00 m from the mirror, what radius of curvature is needed? (Include the sign of each answer.)
m

(c) How far from the mirror will the image be formed? (Enter a negative value if the image forms behind the mirror.)
m

Explanation / Answer

A concave mirror can produced an enlarged virtual image.

--------------------------------------------------

m = 2.55 / 0.72 = 3.54

image position -s' / s = 3.54

s' = 3.54 * 3 = -10.62 m

---------------------------------------------------

focal length 1/f = 1/3 + [1/-10.62]

f = 4.18 m

R = 2 f = 2 * 4.18 = 8.36 m
