MY INSTRUCTOR NEXT RESOURCES Question 8 A helicopter has two blades (see figure), each of which has a mass of 280 kg and can be approximated as a thin rod of length 6.7 m. The blades are rotating at an angular speed of 46 rad/s. (a) What is the total moment of inertia of the two blades about the axis of rotation? (a) Determine the rotational kinetic energy of the spinning blades (a) Number 1 (b) Number : the tolerance is +/-2% Units units Click if you would like to Show Work for this question: LINK TO TEXT All Rights Reserved, A Division of John Wilcy & Sons, in

Explanation / Answer

a)

Here ,

blades can be modeled as rod rotating about their edges

as the moment of interia . I = 2 * ML^2/3

I = 2 * 280 * 6.7^2/3

I = 8379.5 Kg.m^2

the moment of inertia of blades is 8379.5 Kg.m^2

B)

KInetic energy = 0.5 *I*w^2

KInetic energy = 0.5 * 8379.5 * 46^2

KInetic energy = 8.87 *10^6 J

the KInetic energy of the blades is 8.87 *10^6 J
