Question
In the past, paternalism among healthcare providers was an accepted way of practicing medicine. Patients sought care from physicians and accepted their opinions and treatment choices without question. However, in today's healthcare industry, there has been a shift away from paternalism as patients become active in their treatment choices and work as a team with their healthcare professionals. In the light of these facts, answer the following questions:
• What do you feel has caused this shift and why?
• Do you think this shift is for the better? How do you think this team approach to care can affect a patient's care choices?
Explanation / Answer
As the Internet is very common nowadays and people can read through the medical stuff, patients are updated and now don't only trust the physician but rather join in the discussion of the treatment provided. There are many cases have caused the complications just because of a physician's minor mistake.
Yes, I do think this shift is for the better because from the discussion from the team tha patient can make a choice whether he/she wants to opt for the treatment or not. Patient can know of there are any alternative for the care. They can suggest minor changes in the treatment if physicians allow for it and can make it little more comfortable.
