Question
Problem Set #2:Your textbook points out that GDP fails to recognize much of the work done in the home, largely by women. Most estimates assign that work great economic value. For instance, one measure, developed by the UN’s International Training and Research Institute, calculates that counting unpaid household production would add 30-60 percent to the GDP of industrialized countries.
1. Explain why work done at home is not included, but housing services which are also done at home are included.
2. Does it make any difference to how women are treated and thought about that work done at home is not counted in GDP?
Explanation / Answer
Work done at home, mainly by women includes rearing children and household chores. This is not included simply because it is usually the womens choice to be home. Her opportunity cost of doing the next best alternative would result in her in the workforce contributing to GDP. The unfair part is that a paid babysitter or housekeeper does contribute to GDP. Another reason they do not count it towards GDP is because they do not have the capability to clculate this unless surveys were sent out, But whos to say they would not be bias. This second paart of the question is matter of opinion and in my opinion it does not mke a difference how women are treated about work done in the hoe not being counted to GDP. Again, women do have the opportunity to enter the workforce and find gainful employment contributing to GDP.
