Question

Every summer, tickets are sold for a high demand event, tickets are distributed on a first-come-first-served basis at 1pm on the day of the show, but people begin lining up before dawn. Most of the people in the lines appear to be students, but at the performances most of the audience appears to be made up of older working adults (tickets can be transferred) Why is it that students pick up the tickets but working adults watch the performances?

n.b. I need a clear answer using valid economic theory.

Explanation / Answer

The rather simple explanation is that the working adults are unable to pick their tickets up so the students pick them up for them. The students may also receive a discount. To be precise and use economic theory and terminology, the opportunity cost of the adults is much higher than the students therefore, it is cheaper for the students to spend their time in line. Opportunity cost- next best alternative of time, for example, instead of writing an answer on cramster, I could be working at a job making 10 per hour therefore my opportunity cost is 10.
