Question

According to a recent study, kids aged 12 to 17 watched an average of 3 hours of television per day. Suppose that the standard deviation is 1 hour and that the distribution of the time watching television has a bell-shaped distribution. Answer the following questions relying only on the Empirical Rule.

What percentage of kids aged 12 to 17 watches television between 2 and 3 hours per day?
What percentage of kids aged 12 to 17 watches television between 1 and 4 hours per day?
What percentage of kids aged 12 to 17 watches television more than 4 hours per day?

Explanation / Answer

a. 2-3 hours is within the first standard deviation one one side of the median, therefore it covers 34%. b. between one and 4 gives us 34% from the first deviation on the upper side(3-4) and 34% + 13% from the first and second deviations on the lower side, giving us a total of 81% c. we can add up everything before 4 hours to do this one. 50% watch less than 3, and 34 percent watch 3-4. thats 84% that watch less than 4 hours. therefore 16% watch more than 4 hours
