Question

Which of the following statements best describes how to calculate the toxicokinetic half-life using the concentration of a drug in plasma?

_____ A. Time needed for the plasma concentration to rise to 50% of its peak level immediately following exposure

_____ B. Time needed for the plasma concentration to be reduced from its peak to a level equal to 50% of the peak

_____ C. Time that the plasma concentration remains above a level equal to 50% of the peak

_____ D. Time needed for the plasma concentration to be reduced from the 50% level to below detectable limits

Explanation / Answer

In pharmacology, pharmacokinetics implies the movement of drug within the boat whereas pharmacodynamics deals with the mechanism of drug action and it's effects on the boat parts.

Toxicokinetic refers to the two components 1. Rate at which a chemical enters and exits the body 2. Metabolizing of compounds once it is in the body.

Half life is the duration required for the concentration or amount of drug to be reduced into one half. In pharmacology half life is duration of action of a drug.

Time to reach a steady rate can also be called as elimination half life. According to thumb rule, after 1st half life, the drug had reached 50 percent of its steady state, 2nd half life 75 percent of its steady state, 3rd half life 87.5 percent and after 5th half life we get 97percent of its steady state.

Plasma half life is the amount of drug elimination from plasma to one half of its concentration which is 50 percent in the first half life.

The answer to the above question is option B.
