COPD is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It refers to the group of diseases that blocks the airway passage and breathing related problems. So when emphysema occurs due to cigarette smoking , the walls of weakened air sacs break open. It creates a large sac instead of smaller ones . This makes capillaries more difficult to absorb oxygen and expel out carbon dioxide . This makes the person harder to breathe.
