Explanation / Answer
Community mobilization: It is the one of the six elements of community empowerment that refers to the process of carrying out and evaluating the activities with aim to improve the health and other services. It is considered best as it is the best way to gain financial support for your efforts. Community mobilization is the process of reaching out to different sectors of a community in a given locality to focus on a pressing issue needing attention & action. It is a capacity building process in which individuals, groups & organizations in a community participate and carry out activities related to certain issues or problems faced by the community. It helps community to solve its problems through its own efforts by working together & over time.
Community mobilization example:
While working with pharmaceutical organization, I found that prevalence of diabetes type II was very high in a community which does not have enough understanding of the metabolic disorder and are sleeping over the pressuring issue. The chances of undetected cases of diabetes would be very high due to unaware of the issue and could result in fatal condition. So I talked to the doctor who was providing healthcare to the community in that particular area and shared my concern. We agreed on the plan to carry out a free diabetes detection camp on the coming Sunday. However to our surprise the camp was a total failure and only chronic diabetes patient turned up for general advice. We did analysis of the whole situation and arrived at conclusion that we had not done the community mobilization. So we first went an eminent endocrinologist and asked for his help. He agreed to offer one full day for the social service and the day was fixed which was little more than fortnight. Then we went to key opinion leaders who had influenced on the community and spoke to them about the free diabetes camp and its benefits. Most of them agreed to help us. Every evening one or the other key opinion would gather some members from a particular street and then, I and the doctor would explain them the benefit of early detection of diabetes. Within a week time the youth of the community from that locality started participating and reached every household on our behalf to communicate the benefit of the camp and make it a success. Slowly and day by day all the key leaders of the community agreed to ensure the cooperation from all the community members. On the day of the camp, I was very happy to see that youth of the locality was making arrangement for the camp and had taken all the initiatives of calling the community members. The endocrinologist arrived on time and we started the camp. The camp was a great success we were able bind the camp around 11 pm. We detected around 250 new cases of diabetes. Next day the whole new regarding the detection camp was published in all the local newspapers. After some time, I came to know that community leaders are trying to arrange this type of camp on regular basis. The success of the camp on that day taught me the value of community mobilization and how greater success can be achieved with least efforts.
