Explanation / Answer

a) The role of nurses in healthcare has shifted dramatically from the backseat to the frontlines in the past 2 decades. Many research articles and papers published in last years have emphasized the need to empower nurses so that they can address the medical concerns of a growing population with shortage of primary care physicians.

The main areas in which change has occured is in leadership and empowerment, technological advancements and newer nursing speciality with more specialized roles. Many APRNs now practice as first line treating consultants who assess patients and prescribe medications for routine ailments. This addresses the critical shortage of primary care physicians. This ensures quality care and patient centric approach.

Technological advancements have changed the way patient and nurses interact. There is an app or a website for literally all services. With the introduction of the electronic medical health register it is now easy to maintain and access health records of individuals and treat them accordingly. The use of telemedicine and telenursing in far flung rural areas have addressed medical needs of communities.

b) With the dawn of the new generation and new ideologies, it is pertinent to remove nursing staff from the sidelines and project them into the limelight. With this, it is important to empower them with the power to decide rationally. Empowered nurses will make more effective nurses, which in turn will make them happier and provide job satisfaction and security. This will prevent attrition rates and burn outs of existing staff.

Empowered nurses have the ability to motivate patients and overall increase the quality of patient care. Empowered nurses are highly efficient as they are secure mentally and physically.
