Question
Provide your own specific example of how a disease outbreak would be investigated:
First, specify the type of suspected disease outbreak you have chosen: a. What signs/symptoms, etc. suggest that there is an outbreak?
b. Where is this suspected outbreak occurring?
Why is it important to calculate age-adjusted or age-specific mortality rates? Explain, providing your own specific example, including calculations to illustrate why this is important to hospital administrators and/or community health program managers:
Explanation / Answer
Answer: a.Symptoms of an disease outbreak are fever, vomiting, diarohhea, muscle aches, neck pain, apetite loss etc. and can vary depending upon the age group of people, children and pregnant ladies.
b. Suspected outbreak is expected in an area where a group of people has taken contaminated food and water and such event has lead to illness of people.
From the time of infection till the disease outbreak is detected after diagnosis a time span of 40 - 45 days will be invested. A different age group analysis is required in order to detect the severity of disease outbreak. Children will show different level of symptoms and immunity level because of their weak immune system. Similarly is the case of pregnant women and elderly person more than 60 years of age will show weaker immunity towards the infection. In case of female the infection can be lethal and lead to premature delivery, early miscarriage. calculating age specific analysis will further help hospital management to handle the new cases more appropriately as they have previous data's of cases and response to the drugs.
It will be helpful to decide the correct treatment and the doses which can help in further cases and different age group of people.
