Read the following article:

Moore, A.S. & Shepard, L.H. (2014). Myasthenia gravis vs. guillain-barre syndrome what’s the difference? Nursing Made Incredibly Easy! 12 (4). 21-30.

Select one (1) of the following Nursing Diagnoses:

1. Impaired Spontaneous Ventilation     2. Impaired Swallowing    3.Care Giver Role Strain

Address the following:

1. Is the nursing diagnoses that you selected appropriate for the patient with a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre syndrome or both? Explain your answer.

2. Provide an outcome for the nursing diagnosis that you selected making sure that is specific to the needs of the patient with myasthenia gravis or Guillain-Barre syndrome.

3. Identify two (2) interventions that will help your patient with myasthenia gravis or Guillain-Barre syndrome reach the outcome for the nursing diagnosis.

Explanation / Answer

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by weakness in specific muscle groups, especially the ocular and bulbar muscles. It is characterized by weakness, often in the ocular, bulbar, limb, and respiratory muscle groups. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) presents with ascending paralysis and areflexia, often secondary to an infection. It is also known as acute immune-mediated polyneuropathy. Patients must be closely monitored, as they can quickly develop respiratory failure. Both the syndromes are related to muscle and nerve problems. If the patient gets more weakness it results in respiratory issues. So the nursing diagnosis should be Impaired spontaneous ventilation.

1.MG is an autoimmune disorder which is caused due to Tcell antibody dependendent attack resulting in neuro muscular issues while GBS is symmetric muscle weakness caused by decreased deep tendon reflexes. If a patient energy gets decreased which results in inability to maintain breathing .Impaired spontaneous ventilation should be done inorder to reserve patients energy.

2.This nursing diagnosis depends totally upon the case study validation.Diffrences in the outcomes may be observed depemding upon the patient medical ability. This diagnosis is mosly given in Intensive care units when the patient condition is critical.but the patients condition will be in a better situation comparatively.Breathing level slowly increases.

3.The intervention is nothing but an action taken to improve patients medical problemby the symptoms examined. In patients with GBS shows the weakness in legs, initial arm or facial muscles which may impact on respiratory muscle weakness. In patients with MG shows weakness in ocular muscles, limb weakness.etc
