Question

In 2001, the Institute of Medicine published Envisioning the National Health Care Quality Report, which recommended the development of a report that "should serve as a yardstick or barometer by which to gauge progress in improving the performance of the health care delivery system in consistently providing high-quality care." In 2003, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality published the first annual National Healthcare Quality Report along with its companion National Healthcare Disparities Report.

Go to the AHRQ website and find the most recent versions of these reports. Review any parts of the reports you might find of interest, but specifically the highlights section.

In your reply, tell me something that stood out to you in each of these reports. How is this information different than what you believed to be true or did you find support for your views?

Explanation / Answer

Introduction:

The National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report (QDR) is the product of collaboration among agencies from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), i.e. AHRQ, other federal departments, and the private sector. It is a report on health care quality and disparities. This report provides a comprehensive overview of quality of healthcare received by U.S. people and disparities in care experienced by different racial and socioeconomic groups. It assesses the performance of our health care system and identifies areas of strengths and weaknesses, as well as disparities, for access to health care and quality of healthcare.

As per the Institute Of Medicine’s 2001 report, which states that a report should serve as a yardstick to measure the progress of healthcare. The recent report is “2016 National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report” published by AHRQ. In this report, the quality of care and its accessibility is widely investigated.

Key findings of the report:

Improvements in quality of healthcare: There have been some improvements in quality of healthcare from 2000 till 2014-2015 but the pace of improvement among priority areas varies greatly. Below is the quantification of positive impacts across various sectors:

Disparities in healthcare: While the disparities are getting smaller and smaller, however, some disparities still persist especially among the poor and the uninsured.

Significant findings are:

Accessibility to healthcare: The number of uninsured people decreased significantly from 2010 to 2016.

Thus as per the title, “Envisioning the National Health Care Quality Report” published by Institute of medicine, this report serves its purpose by quantifying improvements in the quality of healthcare, accessibility and disparities in healthcare in the U.S.

The information I acquired in this report:

There are three aims for achieving healthcare quality.

Conclusion:

Even though healthcare is moving in an upward trend, there are some disparities such as disparities in patient safety (e.g. in 2014, the percentage of older adults received potentially inappropriate medication), care coordination, and in care affordability (still poor and low-income groups have difficulty to afford to health care).
