Death is a hard topic of discussion. The four poems written by Dylan Thomas really open a dialogue about death between the patient and their loved ones. I think these poems make it easier for those who have lost someone, or are in the process of losing someone, to better understand and talk about this topic. These poems all describe the feelings, emotions, and thoughts shared by people whose lives are near the end. Both still living, and those who have passed. They are connected by the thought of fighting until the end, and remind you, that “though lovers be lost love shall not” (Nadelhaft 2008, page 231). What a comfort to hear those words. Another theme throughout his poems is nature. I think nature is a great metaphor to compare life to, because everyone knows that life and death is just a natural process. It’s easier to digest that “bird, beast and flower” all experience the same cycle (Nadelhaft 2008, page 233). Nature also takes away the personal aspect of death and creates a more broad and open relationship with it. The nature metaphor is also easier to explain to children and loved ones than the medical jargon that is explained to them. It’s a better way to accept, understand, and let go. Thomas did a great job of tying together all of the thoughts of those who are moving on from our world in a way that is clear, concise, and easy to digest. By putting death as the center of his work he created an open discussion, rather than an opinion, which will allow individuals to have a clear conscience from their personal feelings, rather than pain or anger which is normal.
