Reflect back on a current job or previous job. Identify a hazard or condition wherein you felt unsafe or unprotected as a worker.Access the: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/hierarchy/default.html Identify and describe the occupational or workplace unsafe condition or hazard. Use the hierarchy of control to apply intervention that could have prevented the risk or hazard. How will you propose to your workplace to improve safety? What Cal-OSHA regulation is violated if your workplace refuses to correct the hazard that you identified.

Explanation / Answer

One of the recent occupational hazard that i came across my previous job is musculoskeletal disorder that is excessive soft tissue usage leading to muscle fatigue .In my case as i was working in a private healthcare as a nursing personnel i needed to be on my feet almost 8-10 hours without proper rest leading to varicose veins as well as a stressed mind even after returning home.Long hours of works and skipping of meals led to anorexia accompanied by drastic weight loss .Things got worse when i started having muscle cramps often in midst of my workshifts and a worse mental health.

Here the hierarchy or control which could have controlled is the nursing administrator head as well as the medical head of the healthcare as they should have recruited more manpower with respect to the number of beds in the hospital. We were about 2-3 nurses for 60 patients in each department.Literally we were working like with no proper refreshment breaks let alone rest even being denied of our duly holidays. And also going by hierarchy of personal protective equipment(ppe) we should have gone to duty taking proper food but due to odd duty hours most of us used to go on empty stomach only.We were given 5 nights at a stretch with one night off.We also adapted compression stockings as well as special orthopedic shoes with special soles (prescribed by orthopedists)to tackle long standing hours .

We the nursing personnel requested the nursing administrative head along with the matron to increase manpower so that nurses can atleast take some time off for refreshment and rest a while and thus be not sick themselves but of no avail.

My workplace employer didnot pay heed to our requests. Many of us were taken ill. Also being so insufficient in number the quality of health care was also not upto the mark which gave us low job satisfaction. The general duty clause of osh act of 1970 is violated which states an employer should ensure an environment free of serious health risk hazards which unfortunately our employer failed to do so.
