Question

Word problem! The utilities bill for a house is $192.05 with $122.63 for electric between 5/12-6/10 and $69.42 for gas from 4/29-5/31. The occupants are Dee, Kay, Lee, Chris, and Em. Kay is there 4/29 and moves out 5/6. Lee moves out 5/23. Chris moved in on 5/15. Dee and Em were there for the entire period. How much should each person pay in exact amounts? I keep coming up $30 short of the total and I'm not sure why. Word problem! The utilities bill for a house is $192.05 with $122.63 for electric between 5/12-6/10 and $69.42 for gas from 4/29-5/31. Explanation / Answer

Per day bill for elctric = 122.63/30 = 4.09

per day bill for gas = 69.42/33 = 2.10

So, Key will pay = 4.09*0 + (2.10*8)/5 = 3.36

Lee will pay = (4.09*4)/4 + (4.09*8)/3 + (2.10*8)/5 + (2.10*9)/4 + (2.10*8)/3 = 28.68

Chris will pay = (4.09*4)/4 + (2.10*8)/5 + (2.10*9)/4 = 12.175

Dee will Pay = (4.09*4)/4 + (4.09*8)/3 + (4.09*18)/2 + (2.10*8)/5 + (2.10*9)/4 + (2.10*8)/3 +(2.10*8)/2 = 73.89

Em will pay = (4.09*4)/4 + (4.09*8)/3 + (4.09*18)/2 + (2.10*8)/5 + (2.10*9)/4 + (2.10*8)/3 +(2.10*8)/2 = 73.89
