Question

You are a quality control manager in an oil refinery in Fujairah. You have discovered that the oil company is dumping waste products from the refining process into the sea. This is against the law, but the company is doing it secret y. You have talked with your boss about it, but he has denied that the company is dumping waster into the sea and has told you to stop prying into this subject, e has also reassigned you to a different part of the company where you are not involved in the oil refining operation. He has threatened that if you insist on digging more into this subject, you will lose your job. Should you go to the government with your evidence of dumping? Should you give your evidence to an Emirati environmental group anonymously? Should you ignore the illegal dumping and go about your business as usual? What are the implications of each option? (Who is affected? How are they affected? What are the possible results?) What do you believe is the best option? Why? Support your decision with ethical arguments.

Explanation / Answer

Yes as a responsible citizen I will definitely go to the government with the evidence of dumping. This is because this dumping of waste product will cause an adverse effect on the society as a whole. This will also destroy the ecosystem and will degrade the environment. Thus it is my responsible to take such actions and make a solution to this problem.

Yes I would also provide the evidence to an Emirati Environmental group anonymously so that this problem is solved and the refinery take proper steps to reduce or eradicate the dumping of waste products.

As a responsible citizen it wound be ethically wrong to ignore this illegal dumping and carry on my business. Thus I would not ignore.

If I go to the government, then the company would be negatively affected as the Government will penalize the refinery as it is illegal. But the environment will be safe and the people whose livelihood depends on the sea like the fishermen will not be adversely affected. The government might put a fine on the refinery or can cancel its license to refine oil or can punish them to buy an appropriate machine so as to convert the waste products into biodegradable waste.

If I go to Emirati Environmental group then the volunteers will take care of the issue. They will try there best to sort the issue either by making an agreement with the refinery or to go against the refinery and raise consciousness to the public agaist this unethical dumping. In this case, the refinery’s value will diminish.

The best option according to me is to complain to the Emirati Environmental group so that the refinery can solve its problem of dumping waste through negotiation and agreement. If this doesnot work, then the government should be informed.
