Question

The city of Boston has been debating what to do with its homeless population for a number of years. According to the 34th Annual Homeless Census on Dec. 16th, 2013, there were 7,255 homeless men, women, and children in Boston. Many homeless can be found on the streets of Boston, begging for money from people who pass them. One common recommendation people give about giving money to the homeless is “give them food, but don’t give them money.” What economic problem can explain this recommendation, and why does it explain why people recommend giving the homeless food but not money?

Explanation / Answer

People recommend giving the food to the homeless rather than money because poort people spend money on unnecessary things like drinking which badly affect the economy and if people pay money then will not spend that on the purchase of some house because they always want to show that they are poor. Instead of this, people prefer to provide food so that they will consume some healthy diet irrespective of just collecting money and spend in unproductive things. Generally when money is given to beggers then that money is taken by their family head and he met his habits like smoking, drinking rather than purchasing some good thing for their children. So, it is always beneficial to provide food.
