is time to find some solutions to the problem. Your solutions should be realistic and feasible and should
make sense, given time, cost, and human constraints and conditions.
Assessment Directions:
In this three-paragraph research assignment, you will: 1. State your problem in one sentence. 2. List three practical solutions that you have brainstormed. 3. Once you’ve listed the solutions, find three articles from the ITT Tech Virtual Library or from other
credible sources—such as newspapers, magazines, academic journals, peer-reviewed articles, and
from sources such as EbscoHost—that help support each solution as viable and practical. If you do
not find articles for each solution, then you may use 1–2 articles for the same solution. List these
articles in APA format. 4. From there, begin your paragraphs. In each paragraph, summarize the article in 2–3 sentences.
Then, talk about how it supports your proposed solution using facts, statistics, examples, and
anecdotes from each article.

To help you on this assignment, consider a student who is writing about the connection between poverty
and obesity. This student has proposed a community garden in a poor urban area as one solution to the
problem of low-income people only being able to afford unhealthy food. To show that urban gardens are
feasible, this student finds an article about successful urban garden projects in the city of Milwaukee. The
second solution this student proposes is that fast-food restaurants, which are often found in poor areas,

start offering more healthy options. The student then finds an article about McDonald’s healthy food
options. The third solution this student offers concerns exercise programs for children in low-income areas.
The student finds an article about why these after-school exercise programs have failed due to lack of
student participation.  
In three paragraphs—one for each article—the student briefly summarizes the main ideas of each article
and then offers some relevant information from each article that will help show the feasibility (or
infeasibility) of each solution.  
This is just one example of how you can use sources to help support your solution ideas. Ask your instructor

Explanation / Answer

Risk of obesity is more consistent for people of low income level. Studies show that BMI (Body mass index- an indicator showing excess body fat) has been higher among adults in the lowest income and education group. Healthy food items are more expensive in terms of cost. Whereas, junk foods, refined grains and fats are inexpensive and available for low-income communities and societies. Cheap food items have mostly lower nutrient value and quality and due to overconsumption have been linked to obesity.

Low-income groups have more availability for fast-food restaurants. These restaurants serve nutrient-poor quality foods at low prices. Consumption of fast food items has high calorie value but low nutrient value which leads to weight gain. Often, low income communities skip their meals and have disordered eating habits to stretch food budget gives rise to weight gain. Low-income families often face stress and anxiety, which again is associated with obesity.

Lower income communities have fewer physical activity resources including fewer parks and gardens, thus are less physically fit than high income groups. Low-income groups have less green space (trees and plants) and more signs of trash. Communities gardens play a significant role in making healthy communities. This gives rise to positive and psychological well-being. Building community garden gives opportunities to undertake physical activities, relax which helps in reducing stress and anxieties. Fresh air makes a person go for physical, mental and social well being.

McDonald has introduced side salads with regular burgers to keep intake of protein, body building food component. They offer grilled chicken wraps and burgers instead of fried chicken wraps. Nutritionists in McDonald have introduced a healthy meal for kids including yogurt and a fruit with potato fries and chicken nuggets. With this meal, the right amount of calories are taken in comparison to other fast food items. Thay also offer beverages with non-fat keeping in mind today's consumer preference for healthy food items.

After-school exercise programs have failed due to lack of student participation. Participation in after school programs gives rise to emotional and behavioral relations among students. After school programs make students engage in creative and educational activities. It is necessary for students to participate in such programs to work upon their skills and capabilities. It makes them discover hidden creative traits and allows them to make social relations and friends. With such programs, they engage in learning skills and makes them achieve educational competencies.
