One of the most contested discussions is the changing of the minimum wage. Many contend that this will only impact teenagers, but others state that this is no longer true given the changing economy we live within. As noted previously, some states have minimum wages above the Federal, whereas some do not enforce a state specific one at all. What do you think about the change in the minimum wage? As the target group that in theory would benefit from an increased minimum wage, do you believe this is a nationwide need or a regional specific need? Many of you told me at the beginning of the semester you were from other states, what does your state minimum wage look like compared to Maryland's $8.25 per hour?

Explanation / Answer

Changing of the minimum wage is more of a regional specific need than a national need. This is because the standard of living and job structures are different in different regions and thus different regions will need different levels of minimum wages.

For e.g. Maryland might need $8.25 per hour of minimum wage, but this wage rate would not suffice the workers in California and they demand $12 per hour of minimum wage, which is also justified, looking at the high standard of living in California, as compared to Maryland.

Thus, change in minimum wage must be made looking at the needs and living standards of workers in different regions, and must not be set at a flat rate for each region, as it would lead to an uproar among workers of some states.
