Question

About 12.3% of workers in the United States are members of Labor Unions. That is down from 13.4% over the last 10 years. Below are some of the highlights from the most recent Labor Union Participation Study done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

More public sector employees (7.9 million) belonged to a union than did private sector employees (7.4 million), despite there being 5 times more wage and salary workers in the private sector.

Workers in education, training, and library occupations had the highest unionization rate at 38.1 percent.

Black workers were more likely to be union members than were white, Asian, or Hispanic workers.

Among states, New York had the highest union membership rate (25.2 percent) and North Carolina had the lowest rate (3.1 percent).

Given the information above, answer the following questions. Be sure to provide explanations with your answers. Remember an explanation is always more than one or two sentences.

1. A union member must pay dues to belong to a union. Do the benefits received justify the dues                                                                                                                             paid?

2. Does society overall benefit from Unions?

3. If you were opening up a manufacturing plant to produce power boats, would you be more apt to locate in New York or North Carolina?

Explanation / Answer

1. Yes, the benefits justifys the dues paid. If a person pension for 10 yrs employment is 10 X better than being a ER RN for 10 yrs. Health care , dental, vision, life insurance is the best a person ever had and he dont have to pay 1 cent towards insurance . He pay $32 a month for Union dues to get what amounts to $25 a hr in free employee benefits.

2. Yes, unions are vital to the economy, because they ensure that the working-class citizen has money to spend.-- The middle-class worker is what keeps the economy going, not the occasional spending by the super rich. The health of the economy is usually determined by how much people are buying things in stores, and how many people are unemployed. The working class determines both, and a properly working union helps protect their rights and level of pay.

3. I would be more apt to locate my plant in North Carolina because, there union membershipship rate is low (3.1 percent) -- “Unions function as labor cartels. A labor cartel restricts the number of workers in a company or industry to drive up the remaining workers’ wages….. Companies pass on those higher wages to consumers through higher prices, and often they also earn lower profits. Economic research finds that unions benefit their members but hurt consumers generally, and especially workers who are denied job opportunities. Some unions win higher wages for their members, though many do not. But with these higher wages, unions bring less investment, fewer jobs, higher prices, and smaller plans for everyone else.
