Question

Obedience to authority can be a powerful social pressure to conform and comply with a request that might be against our intuitive sense of right and wrong. Milgram's study of obedience has contributed to understanding how people can commit inhuman acts under situational constraints. Read about the experiment and put yourself in the participant's situation and explain how you honestly think you would have responded if you were in that experiment. Would you have administered the shocks? Please remember that I need to know that you have read and understood the materials.

Explanation / Answer

THE EXPERIMENT MENTIONED ABOVE IS A VERY DIFFICULT ONE TO PERFORM AFTER TAKING A LOOK AT THE EMOTIONAL EFFECTS IT INFLICTED ON THE SUBJECT VIZ. TEACHER. NOT ONLY THE TEACHER BUT EVEN THE AUDIENCE WERE EMOTIONALLY STRESSED TO EXTREME LEVEL.

NOW AS REGARDS THE LEVEL THAT I WOULD HAVE ADMINISTERED THE SHOCK, DEPENDS ON VARIOUS VARIABLES. EVERY PERSON HAS A SOFT HEART, APART FROM IT, A TEACHER CAN DEFINITELY AGREE TO GO TO SOME STRICTNESS IN TEACHING A STUDENT. ALSO IN THE EXPERIMENT THE TEACHER HAS HIMSELF EXPERIENCED THE SHOCK. SO DURING THE EXPERIMENT THE TEACHER WAS ASSUMING THE SHOCKS TO BE RELATIVELY LOW IN BEGINNING. TO SOME EXTENT EVERY TEACHER WOULD AGREE TO GIVE SHOCKS UNTIL THEY ARE OF LOW VOLTAGE. HOWEVER FOR HIGHER LEVELS THE RATE OF OBEDIENCE MUST BE VERY STRONG, THE PERSON SHOULD BE UNDER EXTREME MENTAL STRESS, HE MIGHT EVEN FEEL THE ACTUAL PAIN AND THINK THAT HE HS DONE SOME HARM TO THE LEARNER. HOWEVER THE EAGERNESS TO BE A PART OF AN EXPERIMENT AND TO SEE THE FINAL OUTCOME MAY PUSH THE TEACHER TO THE EXTREME LIMIT OF GIVING SHOCK.

SO IN THE END I WOULD SAY THAT YES MAJORITY OF THE TEACHERS WILL AGREE TO GO FOR THE SHOCK THERAPY.
