Question
Please answer Q2-6 Thanks Local Geology Figure 4 is a generalized geologic map of the New York region that shows the distribution sediment types that underlies the area. You have been provided with samples of these rocks and sediments. Figure 5 on the next page, is a more detailed map of Manhattan and the Bronx. It shows the geology of these parts of New York City more accurately than can be depicted on the generalized geologic map in Figure of different rock and The locations where the rock samples were collected are indicated by circled numbers in the more detailed maps of Figure 2 (samples 8-12); and Figure S (samplss 1-7). The rocks of samples 6 and 7 occur just to the east and to the west of the Palisades and Generalized Geologic Map of the New York City Region 1 mile Modern Beach and Dune Sands Outwash Plain Sedim ents Terminal Mor aine (Tln Igneous Rocks Sedimentary Rocks Metam orphic Rocks Generalized geologic map of New York City. Q2
Fordham formation is gneiss
Inwood formation is marble
Manhattan formation is mica schist
Out of these three rocks marble is the least resistant rock and hence Inwood formation is least resistant. Marble is less resistant because it’s composed of calcite having a hardness of 3 on Mohrs’ hardness scale and hence is easily altered by weathering and erosion.
Q3.
a. The elevation of low resistance bedrock would be lower than previous.
b. The feature underlain by rock which is less resistant is valley.
Q4
a. On map black stipple shows the sedimentary rock which are least resistant out of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock.
b. Grey represents low elevations area.
c. Yes, there is a general correspondence exist between the two.
Q5. During the initial phases the rocks present in these are will be shale and limestone as shale gives gneiss and schist on metamorphism while limestone give marble on metamorphism. The area where gneiss is present, there high grade of metamorphism has taken place as compared to the area where schist is present.
Q6. The area of Palisades is comparatively high as compared to other nearby areas which proves the above hypothesis.
