Question

More money in the federal budget goes to social welfare spending than any other function of government; substantially more than national defense (See Chapter 16 Spending Pie Chart). Today the principal job of the U. S. Government is to make transfer payments - taking tax dollars from taxpayers and distributing them through various retirement, welfare, health and public education programs to millions of recipients. Each year a greater percentage of the federal budget is devoted to this purpose and a greater percentage of Americans are receiving these payments in various forms. Remember from Chapter 16 that we are running large deficits each year largely owing to these increasing transfer payments. Are we getting our money's worth from this growing government social welfare spending? Why or why not? Be specific.

Explanation / Answer

I think yes, we are getting our money's worth from this growing government social welfare spending, i think unless the government is not doing corruption, unless its ministers are not taking our money at thier home and giving our money to the society it is a part of deveopment. For me development is not only building bridges and roads, social welfare is also a part of development. By distributing money to retired people government is winning the trust of the people who has given their entire life working for government, may be as risky as military. It is again good if government is spending on welfare, health and public education because this will help the people who are deprived of money and by getting little helps by government can achieve something bigger. Doing for society is also important, building bridges and dams only doesn't create a happy world.
