Map B at type of geologic contact exists between the Undivided granite and gneiss unit and the Ordovician packstone to wackestone? 1. Wh What type of geologic contact exists between the Undivided granite and gneiss unit and the Cambrian quartz arenite? 2. Sketch a geologic cross-section across the entire map area in a geologically appropriate orientation below the map. Hint: it is typically appropriate to draw a cross-section that is across the strike of the main geologic features in the area, e.g., bedding, faults, folds, etc. Make sure you put on the line of section on the map. Check your line of section with a TA before you sketch the section. 3. 112Explanation / Answer
1. The ugn and Opw are in folding relation. The upper portion (above 638600) is synformal fold as both of the beds dipping towards each other. The lower portion (below 638600) is overturned fold as they dip in the same direction.
2. A fold is present between Cqa and ugn. But the ugn is an overturned fold. The dip of the northern limb (the part above 638600) is much higher (73°). Where the southern part (below 638600) is of much lower dip (30-31°). The contact between the ugn and Cqa is antiformal fold on the upper part as they dip opposite to each other and in the lower part it is overturned as they dip in the same direction.
4. This would be a thrust fault if the midline dips to the west. Because the fault could happen along the gneissic plane of ugn. And the plane is very low dipping. So it would be a low angle thurst fault.
5. The entire outcrop is a folded outcrop. Starting from Cqa in West and ending with the same at East.
a) deposition of Cqa
b) deposition of Opw
c) granite intrusion
d) folding of granite
e) overturning of the granite folding
f) folding of entire structure.
Younging direction is a)-f).
