1. Melvin Mudge decided to draw a cross-section along ENE-- WSW direction because the maximum number of geological and topogfraphical features are found along this direction when we traverse across this direction in the area.

A cross section is useful in interpreting a geological map as it shows a clear relationship between the structural and stratigraphic units and cross-sections. They are so important because they appear as if the area has been cut open. Like in mountainous areas and canyons, the area is seen like in the cross section.
