You are an employee at a local corporation and have been selected for a team to review a security concern. The management is concerned about balancing security with the right to privacy.

Several women have complained that they are being harassed by other women in the room where they change into protective coveralls for the assembly line. They have been taunted, slapped, and tripped. One allegation states that the harassment is racial, another that it is same-sex sexual harassment. Your team proposes a solution to the problem - to have managers present while the women are changing. Now, though, two other women are objecting to being observed by managers as they change. What solution would you come up with that would balance security with privacy?

Explanation / Answer

This is an interesting case since it is fairly limited to one sex (female). I will try to address the issue with that in mind.


With a need of security and privacy, it's a bit hard to balance since initial reaction to the two ideas is that they are separate entities. But it is possible to find such a balance, by redefining the terms of security and privacy so that they may meet all the preferred requirements of the employees. The plan can be modified so that the employees who are in the changing room can configure a rotating model in assigning weekly "spotters" who are responsible for reporting all instances of inappropriate or invasive behavior. By creating weekly reviews of the changing conditions that are rotated consistently, the entire body of employees can take part in proactively spotting out trouble or behavioral issues. In addition, those who are not assigned the spotter role are able to individually submit complaints to run against the weekly reports of the spotters. This can allow a cross-referencing of incidents to see if there is a proper record.

In doing so, one can eliminate the need for an external party (manager) to be present in the locker room while establishing a position that has the responsibility for the wellbeing and safety of their peers.
