Question
Match the following terms to the definitions. Each term has only one best response.
A. A material or substance through which water can pass through.
B. The ratio of pore space to total volume; a measure of that portion of a cubic foot of soil that is air space and could therefore contain moisture.
C. The movement of water on and just under the surface of Earth.
D. The amount of rainfall that passes over the surface of the Earth.
(select A, B, C, or D) 1. Porosity
(select A, B, C, or D) 2. Permeable
(select A, B, C, or D) 3. Surface runoff
(select A, B, C, or D) 4. Overland flow
Explanation / Answer
A.2. Permeable. A material or substance through which water can pass through is a permeable substance. This is because all the pores are interconnected and they allow free path for the water to pass. If there is not conectivity between the pores then they are impermeable substances.
B. 1. Porosity. It is the ratio between the pore present in the material or a substance to the total volume of the substance. This is calculated to findout the porosity of a substance.
C. 3. Surface runoff. This is because when the water is flowing on a surface, some part of it is infiltrated in to the ground. During heavy rains or flood we can see some water is going into the ground also. This will actually recharge the groundwater.
D. Overland flow. This is like the water simply flows on the surface at high speeds on anykind of surface.
