On the night of June 28, 1839, the Amistad set sail from Havana, Cuba, carrying 53 African slaves. The ship was bound for plantations in another part of Cuba. The slaves mutinied and took over the ship, but because they did not know how to sail, the Amistad went far off course. It was captured off the coast of Long Island, New York, on August 26, 1839. This led to a trial of the mutiny leader, Cinque, and the release of all of the slaves on the Amistad.

In context to the above mentioned details, In the United States vs The Amistad case , the US supreme court ruled that the slaves were illegally transported and set them free. The Amistad, after being moored at the wharf behind the US Custom house for one and a half year, it was auctionded in 1840.

It was purchased by Captain George Hawford of Newport, Rhode Island. He renamed it Ion, after few years he sold it in Guadeloupe in 1844. After that there is no record of what became of Ion.
