Question
Explain possible causes of the diversity observed in the following data set: Why there are different numbers of same Ant species in different locations?
Location: Brazil >>> Number of Ant species: 222
Location: Trinidad >>> Number of Ant species: 134
Location: Cuba >>> Number of Ant species: 101
Location: Utah >>> Number of Ant species: 63
Location: Iowa >>> Number of Ant species: 73
Location: Alaska >>> Number of Ant species: 7
Location: Arctic >>> Number of Ant species: 3
Explanation / Answer
The physiological condions of ants vary according to the environmental conditions. Ants are one of the most diverse, abundant and ecologically important animals in tropical forest ecosystems. An extraordinary abundance of ants is typical for rainforest canopies, where ants represent 20–60% of the total arthropod biomass. Since rainforest canopies provide easy available food of ants which include plant leaves, nectar, aphid, seeds, remains of death animals, exudation, cooked or raw food.
So, some countries which favours the existence of ant species as per environmental conditions we will see more diverse species like Brazil and some regions which are having unfavourable conditions like Arctic we can see low diversity.
