Body waves are of two types: Primary waves (also called P-waves, or pressure waves) and Secondary waves (S-waves, or shear waves)

P-waves are compression waves. They can propagate in solid or liquid material.P-waves are faster waves.They travel at speed of sound

S-waves are shear waves. They only propagate in solid material.S-waves are slower than P-waves . The motion of secondary waves is perpendicular to the direction of the wave travel

The similarities between p and s waves are both pass through solid rocks
