Question

Buying a New Pair of Shoes

You buy a new pair of shoes on sale. The printed receipt states very clearly that the shoes are not returnable. After you get them home, you wear the shoes around the house for a day and decide that they just don’t fit you correctly. So you take the shoes back to the store. You start to yell angrily about the store’s poor quality service so that people in the store start to stare. The clerk calls the store manager; after some discussion, the managers agrees to give your money back.

Is this ethical?

Provide an explanation and justification for your decision to return the shoes, and why your tactic was necessary. (See some examples of justifications on pages 131 – 132).

Explanation / Answer

The behavior exhibited by the customer is not ethical because the terms and conditions of purchase is clearly stated that “purchased product will not be returned”. It is the responsibility of the customer to check and verify the suitability of shoes for his / her use. Appropriateness of shoes of the customer through trial can be ascertained in the store also.

There are following justification and explanation from the customer side:

1.    Causing pain after wearing shoes for a day

2.    Shoe stuff is causing inflammatory effects

3.    Stuff of the shoe is showing signs of wear and tear

4.    The Customer does not find it comfortable

The Tactics applied by the customer became necessary because store manager did not want to loose other customers present in the store. Yelling in store and highlighting the poor quality of shoes can cause many other customers to go back without a purchase. It will cause a loss of business to store. That’s why, store manager readily agreed to return back the shoes as it will prevent the further damages.
