As portrayed in the film, our food system has become very mechanized as a way to cheaply and efficiently provide vast quantities of food. Would it be possible to feed the hundreds of millions of people who live in our country without this kind of industrialized food system? If so, how? If not, what might we do to avoid the problems that seem to come with it In the film, author Michael Pollan says, "I think that one of the most important battles for consumers to fight is the right to know what's in their food and how it's grown." How does his position compare with the California Farm Bureau's position? Farmer Joel Salatin in the film says, "We're willing to subsidize the food system to create the mystique of cheap food when actually it's very expensive food." What might he mean by this statement?Explanation / Answer
FOOD INC is a 2008 American documentary film directed by ROBERT KENNER and narrated by ERIC SCHLOSSER and MICHEAL POLLAN. In this film the director clearly examines the industrial production of vegetables, grains and meat.
The actual film was split into three parts where the first part details about the meat production and consumption in the United States. The second part of the film deals with plant production like soybeans and corn, where as the last part deals with the legal and government response to the practices done in the first two parts.
3. JOEL SALATIN says "we're willing to subsidize the food system to create the mystique of cheap food when actually it's very expensive food". He means to say even though it may seem like a cheaper way to produce food it actually cost even more for our lives as well as our health. His intention clearly indicates that the food manufacturing companies should concentrate more on public's health care and take precautionary measures to cover up their unhealthy practice even though they cost them more money. My opinion about this statement is I would request the food companies to increase their food standards and increase the prices as well. People easily fall for offers, discounts and this affect the consumers health directly or indirectly with diseases like diarrhoea, IBS and many digestion as well as stomach problems. My sincere advice is that we consumers have the tught to ask about the details to know what products are included in the food we eat and get a clear IDEA ABOUT WHAT WE ARE EATING, this is the only best option left for our present generation.
This film was nominated for the academy award in best documentary film category but unfortunately it did not win. But the film has received a lot of positive reviews from press,critics and audience. At the end the film concludes by claiming that our present generation food industry is economically and environmentally unsustainable.
