Question
1. Urban sprawl can have some negative impacts on the environment with respect to use of resources, land use, andpollution. Choose ONE of these three aspects and EXPLAIN why having large areas of suburbs rather than densely populated urban areas can have a negative environmental impact.
2. Advancements in agriculture have decreased the percentage of the human population that is malnourished, even as the human population has dramatically increased. However, this success has not been without a price. CHOOSE TWOof the three advancements listed below, and fully EXPLAIN one way that this practice can negatively impact the ENVIRONMENT (not just humans). (Note: if you answer all three, please indicate which two you want to be graded. Otherwise I will grade the first two that are answered.)
Use of inorganic fertilizers
Use of pesticides
Use of transgenic crops
Explanation / Answer
The term urban sprawl is associated with the expansion of the human population and the social and environmental consequences with the development. This urban sprawl or suburban sprawl shows the expansion of human population in low-density areas, car-dependent rather than the high-density central urban areas thus, the negative impact on the environment is larger from urban sprawl or urbanisation. This involves migration of population from highly populated towns and cities to the low-density residential development. However, this migration impacts on the environment negatively, higher air and water pollution is the consequence of urban sprawl and also, traffic jams, more car-dependent and less usage of public transport which leads to greater pollution. Hence, the large areas of suburbs rather than densely populated have greater negative consequence on the environment in terms of environmental degradation, health issues, increased traffic, pollution and impact on social lives of people. Use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture have leads to greater agricultural productivity and have decreased the percentage of population that are malnourished due to greater production and thus higher income even though human population has dramatically increased.Hence, the use of inorganic fertilizers or synthetic fertilizer that are artificially produced and contain synthetic minerals or chemicals have negative impacts not only on humans but also on the environment. Also, usage of pesticides that are chemical substances used to kill pests have negative impacted humans and the environment.
