Product and brand failures occur on an ongoing basis to varying degrees within most product-based organizations. Product failure and the product life cycle

Most products experience some form of the product life cycle Usually they experience the four recognized life cycle stages including: i) Introduction ii) Growth iii) Maturity (or saturation) iv) Decline. The Yahoo failure can be studied from the simplest model for natural entities sold as products, which is constituted of four stages, i.e., acquisition, development, exploitation, retirement.

The company clearly lacked vision to shift from a desktop world to a mobile and social world. Yahoo failed to build their own successful mobile and social products or to acquire any. Buying out flickr and developing it into the next Facebook or Instagram could be a big opportunity, they didn't invest properly in it.Focusing so much for years on Panama (Google Adwords competitor) and search in general, when they ended up losing to Google and eventually outsourcing this to Microsoft.
