Question

describe the source of a hazardous algal bloom (HABs) and identify the effects of HABs on humans and animals.

What are the sources of hazardous algal blooms? Find one species of plankton that creates a hazardous algal bloom (HAB) and describe the species (ex. is it a dinoflagelate?) and what the effects of this HAB are on humans and animals. What technology can be used to solve this problem? What decisions have scientists made regarding the cause and solution of this problem? Explore the impact of their decisions regarding this issue.

Explanation / Answer

Hazardous Algal blooms form when toxin producing algae grow in colonies. Some algaes are non-toxic but they consume oxygen, clog the gills of fish, Forms smelly piles on beaches. These incidences are called Hazardous Agal blooms. They toxicate the fishes and human beings get toxicated by eating these fishes. They clog fishes gills which restricts them to breathe properly. People do swim and drink water and often they have seafood which impacts on their life. One of the species is Alexandrium sp can paralyse the body or even can cause death. Microcystis can cause liver problems or even can lead to liver failure.

Aeration: In this process, air and water come to close contact. Turbulence helps in increasing the aeration of flowing streams. water flow is usually countercurrent to atmospheric. There are diffuser which pumps air which forms plumes which comes to the surface and through a vertical force propogate outwards. It is very hard to deal with HABs and scientists are working hard day by day to mitigate this issue. Scientists worked hard and identified many such algaes and because of which a few HABs can be modeled and predicted on a regional scale. If we know the kind of algae, We can help in reducing their affect. Without knowing the algae there is no way we can deal with this situation.
