Question

There is even a webpage for this: http://asteroidday.org. Go yea to this web site and use the information available there to complete the following action items Action item 1:

what are the important orbital characteristics of Apollo and Amor near earth asteroids?

1-Apollo

2-Amor

Action item 2: How does the Torino Scale quantify the asteroid impact hazard?

Action item 3: Pick an impact crater, any impact crater anywhere on Earth.Describe the characteristics of the crater – location, size, age, shape and any other interesting characteristics. In this case try the website: http://impact.scaredycatfilms.com/ Name:…………………………………………….

Action item 4. Briefly describe how the orbit of an asteroid heading straight for the Earth might be changed or deflected (in this case go back to the Asteroid Day web page)

Explanation / Answer

1. (a): APOLLO asteroids orbits do cross earth's orbit as they spend most of the time outside earth's orbit. To be honest technically Apollo asteroids have wider orbits than earth. Orbital period is greater than one year.

(b) AMOR orbits approach but do not cross earth's orbit like Apollo asteroids. Generally AMOR orbits are far far away from the sun as well as earth's orbit.

2. TORNIO SCALE is a tool used to categorize potential earth impact events such as asteroids and comets. This tornio scale ranges from 0 to 10 provided with color coding which is intended to facilitate public easily by asteroid impact hazard monitoring community. The tornio scale do captures the consequences of a potential impact event. Events that have no likely consequences usually belong to zero and higher numbers correspond to progressively more serious impact. But at the present time no asteroid has been assigned an impact prediction with reading higher than zero.

3. POPIGAI CARTER in northern Russia also known as world's largest diamond deposit which was formed by a massive asteroid impact about 35 million years ago. An asteroid travelling with 15 to 20 kilometers per second and about 5 to 7 kilometers diameter slammed into now known Northern Siberia, Russia and the impact was so strong that some of the ejecta from this explosion landed on other continents. Studies estimated that the explosion produced a 100 kilometer wide IMPACT CARTER.

4. ASTEROID IMPACT AVOIDANCE is a process by which the near earth objects could be diverted thus by preventing destructive impact events. A large impact by an asteroid can cause severe damages like tsunami and firestorms. First find out the path of an asteroid and track if we find any and characterize the asteroid by its movement and then plan for a deflection method that would best work for the situation. Painting an asteroid would work according to Scientists because white color would be able to reflect more solar radiation and so if asteroid is painted white, then the coloured section do feel more push from solar radiation and slowly gets deflected. Similarly even the slow gravity tractor works in deflecting the asteroid heading towards earth due to the spacecraft gravity pulls the asteroid away. Like this there are a variety of possible techniques to deflect but they need more development and testing.
