They are simply the unintended side effects of market activities. Externalities can be positive or negative. One example of a positive externality might be when beekeepers provide a means of pollination for fruit growers. Air, water, and noise pollution are examples of negative externalities.

One such positive externality is my brother teaching me many things. Thus his knowledge has positive externality which is not captured by market mechanism. The effect was I became more efficient and gained more knowledge. Thus human capital increased.it increases my life since I know about many diseases and I can immediately contact doctor when need arises. Further I can avoid unhealthy food and practices. Thus my life is expected to increase.
The problem is that market mechanism does not take into consideration the indirect benefits of knowledge of my brother. This can be avoided by providing him incentives, scholarships etc. In this way human capital is valued more.
