Explanation / Answer

1) The Millennium development goals have stressed upon 8 important areas for development like eradicating extreme poverty & hunger, Universal primary education, promoting gender equality, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating diseases, environment protection and global partnership. We

a) Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger: One of the most important aim of MDG was to reduce the proportion of people living in extreme poverty by half till 2015. As per UN report more than 1 billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty. Number of people living on more than $4 a day has almost tripled making it half of the workforce in developing nations. Number of undernourished people have fallen by almost half since 1990. Despite these achievements half of the work force in the world works in vulnerable conditions which is an important area for improvement.

b) Universal primary education for all: The second goal was to expand primary education for all children with focus on school enrolments. Some achievements are like increase in primary school net enrolment rate to 91% up from 83% , reduction in number of out-of-school children of primary school age by half, increase in literacy rate among youths to 91% from 83% have been achieved.

c) Promoting gender equality: Third goal was to promote for gender equality with focus on women’s and girls’ equality in education, employment and political areas. Though a good progress has been made but there is much to achieve more. In this area following achievements have been made.

Two third of the developing regions in the world have achieved gender parity in primary education. Now women make up 41 percent of paid workers outside of agriculture, an increase from 35 percent in 1990. The average representation of women in parliament has doubled in last 2 decades but there is still some improvement required.

d) Reduce child mortality: The fourth goal was to reduce child mortality rate in which substantial progress has been made but more can be done by preventing deaths due to preventable disease. Today rate of under- five (children under the age of five) mortality rate has reduced more than three times since 1990s. Vaccinations for Measles has helped prevent 15.6 million deaths.

e) Improve maternal health: The fifth goal was to improve maternal health and survival rate. In this Asian countries have made significant progress by reducing maternal mortality. Today maternal mortality ration has been reduced to half since 1990. There is an improvement in handling of deliveries as 71% of births haven been assisted by skilled health professionals globally, an increase from 59% in 1990. In developing regions 56% of births are attended by skilled health professional in rural areas and 87% in urban areas which can be improved a lot by focusing on rural areas more.
