The Shiprock was formed when the magma cooled below the surface of earth at slow rate. It was originally formed 1000-2000 ft below the surface millions of year ago. The sedimentary rock around this formation gets eroded and compared to rate of weathering of surrounding rock the igneous rock weathers slowly causing the ground level decrease faster.

This forms a mountain of igneous rock over the millions of years time period. The different rate of weathering is the cause for the formation of Shiprock. The sedimentary rock is more pores so there is more area exposed for the weathering also the composition of the rocks makes them prawn to weathering. The dike behind the Shiprock is the originates from the center of the structure which indicates that the dike is from where the magma came in during the formation of the structure.
