Question

Primate cities disproportionately dominate the urban makeup of their countries in size, function, and importance. This overwhelming dominance is referred to as centrality. This centrality results from a concentration of specialized goods, services, and functions that are offered over and above those basic ones available in smaller cities. It is important to note, however, that while all primate cities have centrality, all cities with centrality are not primate cities, nor does sheer size guarantee primacy. Shanghai, China, has centrality and a very large population, but it does not have primacy because China has other large and important cities. Conversely, some cities with smaller populations have primacy because they disproportionately dominate other cities in their country for other reasons.

Urban primacy lends much importance to a city, but it has disadvantages as well. Primacy can result in congestion, pollution, burdens on social and physical infrastructure, and uneven transportation access to lower-order settlements.

Which of the following statements are correct for typical primate cities? (select all that apply)

introduction.

A country or region can have more than one first-order settlement, but a national capital is not necessarily a first-order settlement in all cases. Canada, for instance, has two first-order cities, Toronto and Montreal, neither of which is the national capital.

Use the map key to identify the orders of the various settlements in Spain. Match the type of settlement (first order, second order, third order, fourth order) to the city name.

[One additional useful piece of information: Madrid has 6.6 million residents, and Barcelona has 5.6 million.]

Statements:

2. Primate cities are prone to issues related to over population.

4. To be considered the primate city of a country, a settlement must be over double the size of any other settlement within its country.

PRIMATE CITY is a major city that works as a financial, political and population center of a particular country. Even people do move to primate cities to find good paying jobs and interestingly primate city may or may not be the capital city of the country, but the only important thing to remember here is the primate city must be at least twice as populous as the second largest city in the country.

The population of capital Madrid is about as twice as next biggest city Barcelona, but on the other hand Barcelona urban population is almost as large as that of Madrid(5.3 million vs 6.3 million) MARK JEFFERSON mentioned that "The primate city is commonly at least twice as large as the next largest city and more than twice as significant" The size and dominance of a primate city acts as a pull factor and ensures their continuing dominance.
