Question
To decrease emissions from cars and trucks, which are mobile-source polluters, two possible initiatives include a gasoline tax and fuel economy standards (also known as the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards). The latter aims at improving the average fuel economy of new cars and light trucks. Suppose that your are participating in a round-table discussion and a person in the audience states: "While gasoline taxes and fuel economy standards can influence a car buyer to purchase a fuel efficient vehicle, gasoline taxes are superior means of reducing emissions from the vehicle fleet". Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
I disagree with the statement as gasoline taxes does not reduce the emissions from the vehicles as people will pay money in the form of tax . Thus it does not means the emissions will be reduced. So opting gasoline taxes will not have any effect on decreasing emissions from vehicles.
Fuel economy standards will have some effect as it is imporves the fuel economy in vehicles.
Thus gasoline taxes does not decrease the emissions from vehicles.
