Question

2. For your second post, choose another classmate's argument, and reply to it. In your reply, try to respond to that student on behalf of a defender of the categorical imperative, such as Kant or O'neill. How would they defend the Categorical Imperative in this case? That is, why would they respond that, despite the benefits of the particular lie under question, it would still be immoral to tell it? (The interested student may want to review another, short article by Kant titled "On the Supposed Right to Lie"). Your last post is due by Sunday at 5pm. While I encourage you to type your post into a word processor to check for spelling and grammar errors, please don't "attach": simply copy/paste your essay into the discussion box. Peer review replies should be 300+ words, and include a "references" or "works cited" section.

Explanation / Answer

Despite the fact that if the false statements of not telling the facts and truths can help in maintaining the status quo or avoiding any kind of chaos in the society, even then I would favor expressing the facts and truth to the common public. The main logic behind this is that as a common individual we all want to know the truth but the truth and if any kind of false statement of facts is presented which are disclosed in future, the response of the common public is always negative even though there can be many benefits behind doing so. As a human being, the truth is always appealing to us and we really need only the fair and actual situation so that different actions can be taken to encounter the situation rather than having the Ostrich-like behavior of avoiding the trouble.

As in the question, the example of an asteroid is given; even then I would believe that the government has the responsibility of communicating the fact to the common public so that they can prepare themselves. They can have some countermeasures to protect themselves. Yes, it is true that there could be a lot of chaos in the society but hiding the facts just to prevent any chaos is not the answer. In fact, after telling the truth to the population, the government should take action to control the chaos and help the population to be ready to face the situation.
