Question
4. In the seatbelt example, we hypothesized that the wearing of seatbelts would change two factors in opposite directions. Specifically, the driver deaths per car accident would decrease and the number of car accidents would increase. What happens to the total number of driver deaths de- pends then on how much each factor changes relative to the other factor. Describe an example from your life where a change in one factor causes two factors to change in opposite directions and the net effect depends on how much each factor changes relative to the other factor.Explanation / Answer
4.
One example can be quoted, related to the increase in oil prices. Increase in oil prices, will lead to change in two factors or variables. The first factor will be the decrease in the demand of the oil and second factor is the increase in the demand for the vehicles with alternative energy or fuel efficient vehicles.
Here, these two factors are in the opposite direction where there is a decrease in demand of oil and increase in demand of alternative energy vehicles. Further, these two factors depend upon each other as a decrease in demand of oil depends upon the increased demand of car using alternative energy sources. More purchase of electric car will make relatively bigger reduction in oil demand and vice versa.
