2. Corporations often spend more money on advertising than they do on environmental control. Environmentalists believes this fuels a "culture of waste" leading to heavy use of energy and other resources. People with money are enticed to buy unneeded products more clothes, another car or TV, a new product to replace one that still works, or second homes (a) What does the word sustainability mean to you? (b) Is consumerism compatible with sustainability? Explain. Explanation / Answer

(a) To me, sustainability means using the natural resources (minerals, land, forests, rivers, etc.) at present in a way that it does not threaten the livelihood or the habitation of the future generations. Therefore, sustainability essentially means using resources in a very responsible way at present so that resources are equally available for the future generations.

(b) I think consumerism can be compatible with sustainability. Consumers can be sustainable when we can use resources to fulfill consumerism in a way that resources are not permanently depleted. However, this requires advanced and ‘clean’ technology which can make development sustainable. For example, electric cars are more sustainable than cars run by petrol or gasoline.
