Question

Precambrian Climates Part 1, Hothouse Earth. In the Archean, solar luminosity was ~70-80% of what it is today. Albedo may have varied, depending on surface type. Answer the following questions, recording the GEEBITT data in the table below. Based on your reading about the factors that affect albedo, what global albedo might you use to represent the land surface in Archean Earth? Explain your answer. 1. Part 2. Snowball Earth. During the Neoproterozoic, solar luminosity was about 94% of what it is today 2. Based on your reading, what albedo might you use to represent the land surface 3. What are the roles of solar luminosity, planetary albedo, and the greenhouse of Snowball Earth? Explain your answer effect in determining the climate of Precambrian Earth?

Explanation / Answer

Albedo is a measure of how much light that hits the surface is reflected back without being absorbed. I would choose its value to be 0 as this indicates the earth absorbs all the light hitting it and it’s being determined by the surface features and the atmosphere of the Archean time earth was itself a hot ball of fire and there was almost no atmosphere at the time of its creation and moreover it has not had any surface features that we observe today.

In the snowball earth, the earth is completely covered with white snow and it’ll reflect all the suns incident light back into space so I would choose the value of 1 in which no light is being absorbed by our earth.

Luminosity is the total amount of energy emitted by sun per unit time and it has not changed in the earth history whereas the other two parameters have altered i.e., Albedo as well as the concentration of the greenhouse gases. When we look back in the earth history we find that the earth was nearly dominated by the greenhouses gases which were replaced by the oxygen this result in the reduction of greenhouse gases which help to support the life to flourish. Greenhouse gases also help in the maintaining the earth temperature by trapping it’s in the earth atmosphere for preventing the earth to freeze during the night time.
