Compare the two rivers in terms of pollution levels and threats to sustainability.
What recommendations would you make for protecting the Danube and the Rhine? How would you balance economic roles of the rivers against the pollution caused by economic development?
Identify a river in another part of the world that is facing similar challenges. List those challenges and explain how they are similar to or different from the challenges faced by the Danube and the Rhine.
Explanation / Answer
Both these rivers flows through Europe. The Danube river flows through countries like Germany Austria Hungary Moldova Ukraine Romania Bulgaria Serbia etc. And associated with ports like ports of vienna; ports of krems etc. and discharging its water in Black sea. But the Rhine river passes through countries and Switzerland Austria Germany France Netherlands and associated with ports like Cologne ; kobleng etc. and discharging its water in North sea.
Generally both rivers are used for same purpose by individual like for access of irrigation facilities; fishing and aquatic agriculture. But in the region as hole many of countries use it for low cost transportation facilities; producing irrigation etc.
After the industrial revolution both river faces nealy same problem like pollution and loss of aquatic culture. But some of the countries through which these rivers flow made a good improvement and improve the river condition also uses it for sustainable economy. In terms of sustainability the Danube river is one step ahead of the Rhine river.
The recommendations which can be made to protect these rivers are- reduction in discharge of industrial waste in river; allow the river to flow freely i.e there should be less dam and reservoir on it ; spreading awareness about the harmful practices etc.
The economic role should be balanced by proper utilization of rivers in transportation; aquatic agriculture; less but efficient dam etc.
The same challenges are faced by Indian rivers Ganga and Yamuna. The pollution level is too high but the government is doing good work to improve conditions. Also the projected on interconnecting rivers are in progress.
